Would you work without a contract abroad in vague terms and promised a good salary?

NATIONAL CAMPAIGN FOR PREVENTION OF TRAFFICKING IN HUMAN BEINGS FOR THE PURPOSE OF LABOUR EXPLOITATION

To call yourself a free man is the greatest wealth.

Euripides

The National Commission for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings launched its annual campaign for prevention of human trafficking for the purpose of labour exploitation.

At the peak of spring and early summer, a lot of people that look for better opportunities for seasonal work, and students who work summertime abroad might fall a prey to malicious agents, employers or even friends who often tend to abuse their dreams, plans and ambitions. Human trafficking for the purpose of labour exploitation is a typical example of a contemporary form of slavery.

In cases of labour exploitation the preliminary arrangements with the employers usually distinguish from reality. Usually no contract has been signed in advance. Victims are forced to work and they are underpaid or there is a lack of payment, at all. Furthermore, their IDs or passports are confiscated by the employers who force them to pay back a debt. Upon victims' arrival, they do not start working immediately very often and they are forced to wait until they spend their pocket money and fall into debt to the employer. Moreover, the living conditions are extremely bad, as well as the working conditions.

National Commission for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings would like to highlight that you must be careful when intending to work abroad.

Please, pay attention to the labour agency which coordinates and organises your departure, as well as your future employer. You can find a list of licensed labour agencies on the website of the National Employment Agency: http://www.az.government.bg/internal.asp?CatID=23/02&WA=Exchanges/Firmi.htm

Remember that in order to get a job abroad you must sign a contract in advance which will confirm the working conditions and the duration of the contract. You must possess a copy of the contract in Bulgarian language (or language which you understand) and the official language of the employer. Under no circumstances should you give your personal documents to anyone. Before leaving, contact any of the organisations which can provide more information on safe travelling and working abroad, to inform, consult or check the labour agency. If you have any doubts and concerns, please have a look at the organsations in the country of destination which can provide you with additional information.

If you are abroad and you are in trouble, immediately contact the Bulgarian embassies or consulates in the country of destination. Do not hesitate to contact the Police authorities even if you do not have documents. You might have become a victim of a serious crime and the Police will assist you.
