Would you work without a contract abroad in vague terms and promised a good salary?

She also stressed that due to the intensive efforts in investigating the case and the excellent cooperation with the Bulgarian authorities, with day-to-day exchange of information, a total of 87 Bulgarian citizens participating in the channel were identified. Of them, 22 are accused, 7 of which were apprehended in Austria and Bulgaria, and 31 are victims of trafficking. Further 34 are persons for contact.

The men of the organized criminal group toyed with "deep feelings" for the women-victims (among them an underage girl and a mentally ill woman), due to which initially the victims did not identify themselves as such. In Vienna the victims were forced and solicited into prostitution. During the day they had to work as prostitutes on the street, while at night – in venues, similar to public houses. Almost everything they made was taken by the perpetrators. In addition, three men – victims of trafficking, were forced to beg in Vienna and Bulgaria, again the money they made with beggary being taken from them.

Ms. Fekter underlined that trafficking in human beings, and more specifically trafficking of women for sexual exploitation, are not regional or national issues. She noted that officers from the Austrian side are actively cooperating at all levels, including with States that transit or countries of origin for victims of trafficking. This cooperation is carried out under in framework of international operative measures or through the liaison officers of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, which Austria has stationed in over 20 countries.

Ms. Fekter expressed her gratitude to all officers who took part In solving the case, as well as the Bulgarian authorities, the Prosecution of Vienna, the Federal and District Criminal Services in Vienna. According to her, the basis for this success – the release of the victims and the apprehension of the traffickers - are the non-bureaucratic approach to the exchange of information, the cooperation regarding the undertaken measure of investigation in the country and abroad, and above all the coordinated effort of all relevant sides.
