October 18 - EUROPEAN DAY AGAINST TRAFFICKING IN HUMAN BEINGS

Today, October 18 is the European Day Against Trafficking in Human Beings. Announced in 2007 at the initiative of the Vice-President of the European Commission, Mr. Franco Frattini, for the fifth consecutive year, all European countries observe this day as an important part of long-term commitment to the European Commission on Preventing and Combating Trafficking in Human Beings.

On the occasion of October 18, 2011, the National Commission for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings launched a national awareness campaign, launched on October 3, 2011 with the premiere of the animated film "Two little girls" and will continue until December 10 - World Day protection of human rights. The campaign is conducted jointly with Local Commissions for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings, the State Agency for Child Protection, Ministry of Education, the British Embassy in Bulgaria, Bulgarian Association for Family Planning and Sexual Health,, National Network for Children, UNICEF, International organization for Migration, the Bulgarian Red Cross, EAVES, Comic Relief, Foundation "Centre Nadya", Foundation "Karatas", Foundation "Animus."

The campaign started on October 3, with a press conference on "Visual Arts and accessible way to communicate with groups at risk for problems related to human trafficking." The event was attended by British director Ruth Beni, who presented her animated film "Two Little Girls" available for free use during the campaign. Together with her on the subject attended the Bulgarian directors Stefan and Maria Vassileva Komandarev.

For the purposes of this year's awareness campaign were made audio and video, information booklets, cards and multimedia, which will be distributed through various communication channels by the National Commission for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings and partner organizations. In addition, the campaign includes static visuals in Sofia subway, as well as various types of outdoor advertising in Sofia and the country.

The Local Commission for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings in Plovdiv, Ruse, Varna, Montana, Pazardzhik, Sliven and Burgas, are planning several events to mark the European Day Against Human Trafficking. Citizens, representatives of various institutions and NGOs and the media will have the opportunity to discuss issues related to human trafficking and its prevention during public discussions, round tables, free screenings and many interesting events throughout the country organized on the occasion of 18 October.

Human trafficking is a crime that tramples human rights and is defined as a modern form of slavery. Awareness of the risks may save many people.
